Top 10 Apps of 2012

There's no doubt that 2012 was a big one for mobile devices, and it looks like 2013 will be no different. Christmas Day alone broke records and saw close to 17.5 million mobile gadgets activated. But these gadgets are only as good as the apps that run on them. That's why I've rounded up all of the very best apps 2012 had to offer.

1. Protect your smartphone (Free; iOS, Android) - Hackers are writing viruses and releasing malicious apps for smartphones and tablets. This puts your sensitive data at risk. This powerful app can help keep your phone safe.

2. Scan for the best price (Free; iOS, Android) - Want to find the best price while shopping? Just scan a product's barcode with your phone's camera using this app.

3. Find Wi-Fi on the go (Free; iOS, Android) - Wi-Fi hot spots are a blessing for anyone on-the-go, but finding them can be tricky. This app eliminates the search!

4. Trim smartphone data use (Free; iOS, Android) - With most cellular providers, data is limited. This app helps keep you under the limit to avoid expensive overage fees.

5. Free app turns your phone into a GPS (Free, iOS, Android) - Have a habit of getting lost while driving or walking around a strange town? Don't spring for a dedicated GPS unit; grab your smartphone and this app instead.

6. Send free text messages (Free, iOS, Android) - Texting on a cellular plan isn't cheap. This app allows you to send text messages for free.

7. Look around and get more information (Free; iOS, Android) - Searching with text is so last decade! With this amazing app, just point your phone's camera at something you would like to know more about. The app will bring up relevant information in a snap.

8. Find your lost iPhone (Free; iOS) - Of all the gadgets to get lost or stolen, your iPhone is probably the worst. Thankfully, you can track your device online with this app. Play a sound to find if it's nearby, or use GPS coordinates if you fear it's been taken.

9. Easily check the weather (Free; iOS, Android) - Do you need to put on a sweater, or maybe take an umbrella with you to work? This app gives you hourly and 15-day forecasts for 2.7 million locations across the world.

10. Load your smartphone with coupons (Free; iOS, Android) - Is one of your New Year's resolutions to save money? Carry savings with you on your smartphone with this smart coupon app!
