Kim Answers Your Questions:

Boost your Wi-Fi range

Ralph, from Harrisonburg, VA, listens to my national radio show on WSVA 550 AM.His Wi-Fi is great in his home office and other areas of the house, but doesn't reach his living room. He wants to know what to do.

There's several ways to extend a Wi-Fi signal, Ralph. I cover 5 of them in this column.

Fortunately, the most popular one doesn't cost a thing.

Pop open a cold beer and you can add some nice range to your Wi-Fi. Of course, it also works for soda cans if you're not a drinker. I'll show you how to do it in this fun video.

Two smartphones for $100 a month

Sally, from Green Bay, WI, listens to my national radio show on WTAQ 1360 AM and 97.5 FM. She's shopping for two smartphone plans for her and her husband and is trying to keep the budget at $100.

That's going to be tough, Sally. Verizon and AT&T's plans both use shared data which start at $130 a month for 1 GB of data between the two of you. That's not much, but it's better than Sprint and T-Mobile - you have to sacrifice data entirely on their sub-$100 plans.

Two prepaid plans can be had for less than $100 a month, though. You should definitely look into them if your budget is tight. Avoid the junky phones that prepaid providers offer, though. Either bring your current phone or buy an unlocked model online.

Store your photos online

Lisa, from Joplin, MO, listens to my national radio show on KZRG 1310 AM and 102.9 FM. She's running out of space on her computer for photos and is debating moving them to the cloud. The only problem is that she shoots RAW photos. Is there a solution?

RAW photos typically consume about 10-20 megabytes of space per photo. While that's bigger than the average JPEG, cloud storage sites should be able to handle a good chunk of your photos, Lisa.

As you'll see in this handy cloud storage chart, the norm for free space is about 5 gigabytes - which should hold about 250-500 RAW photos. You can use multiple cloud sites for different photos, too. Just make sure the sites allow RAW files - not all of them do.

iPad Mini vs. Kindle

Adam, from Rapid City, SD, listens to my national radio show on KOTA 1380 AM. He's trying to decide between a Kindle and an iPad Mini and wants to know what's cheaper.

A Kindle is typically going to be cheaper than an iPad Mini. However, Kindle has different meanings these days, Adam. If you're talking about Kindle e-readers, those aren't going to match the iPad Mini in features.

However, if you're talking about the Kindle Fire line of tablets, then we're comparing apples to apples, if you'll pardon the pun. To find out how those stack up, check out my mini-tablet chart for the price and specs. If you're really interested in a Kindle e-reader, I have a chart comparing those, too.

Recover deleted photos

Anna, from Allentown, PA, listens to my national radio show on WAEB 790 AM. She accidentally deleted some photos from her hard drive and was wondering if I knew how to get them back.

I take it you don't use my advertiser, Carbonite. If you did, you'd be able to restore those photos in no time, Anna! Don't forget that you can earn two bonus months from Carbonite if you sign up today using the promo code "Kim."

That will protect you if this happens again. To try to bring back the photos you've already lost, use Recuva or PC Inspector. I'll tell you how to use both of those programs in this useful video.

Operation Komando Troop of the Week:

603rd MP CO

Who: 603rd MP CO

Where: Afghanistan

About the Soldiers: The 603rd MP CO is an Army Reserve Military Police Company out of Belton, MO. They deployed out of Texas earlier this month and have just begun their 9-month tour. Many of the soldiers are on their first deployment, with a good majority in their 20s. They are tasked with mentoring their Afghan partners to set them up for success after the US drawdown.

What they Need: These soldiers are unique in that they do not have a PX (Post Exchange, aka retail store) on their base, so they rely heavily on care packages. Therefore, the essentials such as baby wipes, shampoo, toothbrush/toothpaste, gum and chapstick are great items to send in addition to snacks and goods from home such as sunflower seeds, cookies, crackers, power bars, jerky, nuts, and more. In terms of entertainment, new movies and games are great to send, as well as bigger ticket items to boost morale.

A note from the Sergeant: “I would like to say thanks…I know as someone who has deployed 4 times, that when organizations show Soldiers that they care and are thinking about them, it always makes their days a little bit better, no matter where they find themselves.”

This is your opportunity to show our service men and women that you care. Put a smile on their face and send a care package to the below address as followed:

10 essential apps for your shiny new tablet

In the blink of St. Nick's eye, tablets went from nice-to-have to must-have gadgets this year. They're the way everyone - from kids to seniors - wants to watch TV shows, check email, play games and browse the Internet.

As you've no doubt already discovered, shopping for apps is a daunting experience.

Although the Google Play store has improved a lot - and keeps getting better - it can still be an adventure to search for and find the best apps.

The iTunes App Store is much better organized, but the sheer number of apps is overwhelming - more than 275,000 optimized for the full-size iPad and iPad mini.

Click here for a list of my favorite iOS and Android tablet apps. They'll get you and your gadget off to a roaring start in 2013. >>

You can always count on me to make you smile

Christmas was over, so Rudolph had a chance to do something he had wanted to do for a long time. He made an appointment with a plastic surgeon because he was so sensitive about his looks.

However, it wasn't his glowing proboscis that he wanted changed. He was proud of his nose and the help he had given Santa because of it. No, he was sensitive about his long ears which were much more prominent than the ears of the average reindeer.

So one week after Christmas, he underwent reconstructive surgery, and since that time, January 1st has been celebrated as ... New Ears Day.
